Double Dragon Enters The 3D Realm With ‘Double Dragon Revive’
by Sage Ashford
Developer Yuke’s (best known for their work on the WWE 2K games throughout the 2010s) and publisher Arc System Works have revealed a first look at the upcoming Double Dragon Revive, a 3D revival of the legendary arcade franchise. According to the developers, the series is making a return thanks to “the passionate support of retro game fans”, though realistically at this point it’s more surprising when popular franchises don’t make a come back.
The Steam page for the game is already up, with the first real information about the game:
1. Renewed, stylish character graphics!
See your favorites from the golden age of arcades recreated in modern 3D graphics. Powerful foes from their past return to face off against the Lee brothers.
2. The ultimate belt-scroll action experience!
The player traverses the screen horizontally to take down enemies in this beloved genre. Experience the same simple and intuitive gameplay, with controls and balance refined for the modern era.
The carefully crafted experience, supervised by staff with experience on Arc System Works fighting game titles, makes it easy for new players to get engrossed right away.
3. Thrilling, strategic action!
The combat requires adaptation and variety, more than a simple button-masher. Delve into the strategy by learning enemy patterns and finding the most effective attack timings. Pick up weapons scattered throughout the stages and make the most of the area gimmicks to seize the upper hand in battle!
It’s pretty basic, but the game isn’t due out for a year. Still, it’s a bit surprising they chose to go with 3D models rather than stylized 2D like the other beat ’em ups of late. It would be nice if Yuke’s could experience a bit of a revival though.
Double Dragon Revive is scheduled for 2025 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Steam.
