by Austin Gorton
Puppers! Communist Allegories! Two great tastes that go great together in BOOM! Studios newest installment in the “Pen & Ink” collection, Animal Pound #1: Pen & Ink!
The collection is the deluxe art-focused format of select first issues featuring black and white interior artwork and covers with artist commentary. The latest continuation of the series features the modern retelling of Animal Farm, the timeless Orwellian allegory, by the multi-Eisner-winning, New York Times bestselling writer Tom King (Mister Miracle) and Eisner-nominated industry titan Peter Gross. It’s coming this this October.

This new installment follows Something is Killing the Children #1: Pen & Ink, by Eisner-winning creators James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera, the multiple award-nominated The Many Deaths of Laila Starr #1: Pen & Ink by Ram V and Filipe Andrade, and BRZRKR #1: Pen & Ink by Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, and Ron Garney.
In Animal Pound #1, revolution is nigh when animals living in an oppressive pound have nothing to lose but their cages. One of the most critically acclaimed titles of 2023 returns to print as a special “Pen & Ink” edition, providing a more intimate look at this Animal Farm for the modern age with behind-the-scenes commentary from artist Peter Gross.
“Peter Gross’s striking visuals and Tom King’s relentless commitment to truthful, if painful, storytelling make Animal Pound a powerful, necessary update to the classic novel,” said editor Elizabeth Brei. “All on its own, Peter’s stunning inks and commentary make picking up this return to Animal Pound #1 a necessity!”
Every “Pen & Ink” issue will feature a premium cardstock cover and luxuriously thick wood free interior paper, alongside a gorgeous Spot UV variant cover and a blank sketch cover. This particular issue will be out this October.
