EXCLUSIVE: Lee Loughridge Names His Personal Favourite Coloured Comics And Those Of His Peers

Lee Loughridge is an Eisner Award winning colourist but recently he has set his sights on writing with his comic book series, Midstate, from ComiXology. Ahead of the last issue dropping on Tuesday 23rd July, we asked Lee what five comics he was most proud of to date, as well as those comics he loves but has not coloured himself.

Here’s his top five list of his own work, from a long an illustrious career:

Deadly Class

“I loved everything about this book. Rick’s writing, Wes’ art.  It was the perfect situation where, the three of us being friends, were making exactly what we wanted to together.”

The Good Asian

“Again, working on a great story with friends and making a comic book that looked like nothing else out there.”

Spawn

“Spawn is what got me interested in comics. The color that (Pat) Oliff was doing was next level and inspired me to get my shit together.”

Batman Adventures

“From the moment I started working at DC I wanted to color this book.  It took a few years to get it, but once I got a hold of it, they had to rip it from my hands several years later.”

Heavy Liquid

Paul Pope wanted to make a book only using two spot colors. This was an incredible challenge, but I think we nailed it.

“I was working strictly in the DCU for about 4 years but always had my eye on what Vertigo had going on. I got an opportunity and worked on dozens of Vertigo titles over the publishers’ lifespan.”

Hellboy

“Mark Chiarello got me into the business and as far as I’m concerned, he is the grand-master.  His run on Hellboy shaped my tastes.”

Hellblazer City of Demons

“I did Batman Scarecrow with Sean Murphy and I believed what I did was perfection over his art.  Then I saw Dave Stewart over him on this book and realized I got smoked. Next level stuff.”

Captain America

“Rick Remender was writing and told me Dean White needed a hand and after seeing his color I was utterly blown away.  How the hell was I going to match his insanity.”

“Nick Dragotta and I have been friends for over 20 years. I actually did samples for him.  When we saw what Frank Martin cooked up I was speechless. He is one of the best.”
