Jumping On– Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On July 31, 2024

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Ultimate Spider-Man #7, Marvel

The Ultimates return in a new Ultimate Spider-Man story arc. After an intense battle with the Kingpin, Green Goblin and Spider-Man both know they aren’t as ready to reshape the world as they hoped. Harry and Peter get to work, while Ben and Jonah work on “the truth.” 

Godzilla Rivals: Vs. Manda #1, IDW

Late into the night, the crew of a small fishing trawler off the coast of Australia is keeping busy by telling stories of the sea. Little do they know, they’re moments away from happening upon a mysterious shipwreck… and the fearsome sea dragon Manda going toe to toe with Godzilla in the middle of the most brutal ocean brawl any sailor has ever seen.

Rock & Roll Biographies #24: Run DMC, 10 Ton Press

If you’ve been to NYCC any of the last several years, you probably know that Daryll McDaniels makes his own comics. Darryl Makes Comics. DMC. This isn’t that. Darryl’s solo comics are inner city superhero stories based loosely on the rapper’s own experiences. 10 Ton Press is giving us a graphic history of the group.

Run-DMC were East Coast contemporaries with LL Cool J, Public Enemy, and The Beastie Boys. These groups put rap music on the map in a larger, more commercial way, following in the footsteps of Grand Master Flash, KRS-ONE, Kool Herc and Rakim. Rock & Roll Biographies #24 follows Run-DMC from the release of their debut self-titled LP in 1984, through the achievement of receiving the very first hip hop gold record.

Their sophomore release, King of Rock, was quickly certified Platinum, making Run-DMC the first to achieve that monumental feat. In more firsts, the group was the first hip-hop act to have its music played on MTV. Their generation-defining music was only half of their contribution to hip hop culture, as their iconic Cazal sunglasses, Kangol hats, leather jackets, varsity jackets, dookie chains and Adidas were almost as famous as their rhymes.
