Let The Corpses Tan explores the plot of a heist gone wrong with slick arthouse presentation. This film furthers my belief that form is definitely content. The characters are often creatively cropped out of frame and the extreme close-ups on characters eyes evokes the westerns of Sergio Leone.
The camera follows mysterious figures only identified by black gloved hands — similar to the abstract killers in Dario Argento‘s cinema. Even the use of aesthetic nudity and poetic violence feels drawn from the Giallo tradition. The blazing blue sky and hazey desert backdrop conjures a parallel alternate reality as seen in Alejandro Jodorowsky’s El Topo.
Directors Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani clearly have superior cinematic taste and made this film for true cinephiles. I was mesmerized by the movie from start to finish and was blown away by the unrestrained artistry. Let The Corpses Tan pulls from a long tradition of outlaw cinema and elevates the material to new heights. If you’re a lover of cult films, this one can’t be missed.
