‘Magik’ Saves Mutantkind From Demonic Evil In An Ongoing Series This January

by Tony Thornley

Marvel’s X-Men line continues to surprise with new series announcements. With the full line-up for 2024 announced, we’re already looking ahead to 2025, and the new year brings Magik.

Written by up and comer Ashley Allen and drawn by Marvel superstar German Peralta, the series will find Illyana Rasputina facing demonic threats and her own past. An ancient evil has awoken under the Alaskan ice. Unfortunately for it, that’s Magik’s world now. But she’s not just facing threats from without as her long-suppressed Darkchylde persona is clawing its way back to the surface…

“I’m beyond excited to be returning to write Illyana!” Allen said. “Supernatural stories featuring characters with hearts of gold are my favorite, so this series has been a dream to write! I can’t wait for readers to experience the adventure we take Magik on to slay some demons … and maybe accept some of her own.”

“I am very excited about this project,” Peralta shared. “Magik is a character with an incredible background, surrounded by darkness and mystery. Additionally, she is visually spectacular in all her versions, and I personally love Chris Bachalo’s design. I really enjoy drawing action scenes, as well as emotionally-driven scenes, and Ashley Allen writes a super intriguing script, where she balances both of these types of situations, making my job even more fun than it already is. I mean, what artist wouldn’t love to draw Magik with her great sword facing all kinds of demons?”

I missed Allen’s Blood Hunt: Magik one-shot earlier this year, but it’s great to see Marvel give her an opportunity to revisit Illyana’s adventures. The draw for me here is Peralta. I’ve always enjoyed his work, but ever since his Prisoner X miniseries in 2018, I’ve been a huge fan. His Ka-Zar run with Zac Thompson in particular is stunning.
