NYCC 2024: ‘Silverhawks’ Joins The Dynamite Lineup In January

It was inevitable. SilverHawks will soon join Dynamite’s line of Warner Bros. Discovery comics.

On Monday, just head of New York Comic Con, the companies announced the imminent arrival of the title. Ed Brisson takes the reins as writer with George Kambadais on art. Like Dynamite’s ThunderCats, the book will be a reboot of sorts as old space cop Stargazer assembles a new team to deal with the resurgence of the intergalactic mob led by Mon*Star. To survive the rigors of the assignment and space travel, the SilverHawks are cybernetically altered people — partly metal, partly real as the theme song states — who adopt a bird motif as part of their uniforms. The team consists of “field leader and tactician Quicksilver, ace pilot Bluegrass, strong and silent bruiser Steelwill, compassionate and independent Steelheart, introspective illusionist Hotwing, and unpredictable inventor Copper Kid.”

Of course, fans of the original Rankin-Bass animated series will notice the addition of Hotwing, who appeared much later in the cartoon’s run.

Nevertheless, Stargazer and the SilverHawks will stand at the ready to take on the Mob and other criminal elements making trouble in their sector of space. But unlike the cartoon, Brisson and Kambadais plan to re-frame the team’s adventures in the vein of the “police procedural” like Law & Order while offering additional backstory on the characters and a more realized setting. Meanwhile, seeds are planted for a larger storyline as Mon*Star’s gang may not be the only one active in the region.

“When Dynamite launched ThunderCats I immediately began to pester [ThunderCats writer Declan Shalvey] about the possibility of a SilverHawks book,” Brisson said in a statement. “When [editor Nate Crosby] reached out to me to write ThunderCats: Apex, my first question was ‘When are you doing SilverHawks?!?’ I am very excited that this book is happening and that I’m privileged enough to be involved. I couldn’t ask for a better collaborator than George. So, strap in, because I’m about to pour all the love I have for the SilverHawks into this baby. I’m going to make you all love it too!”

Supporting the first issue are covers from Shalvey, Lucio Parrillo, Jae Lee, James Stokoe, Geraldo Borges, and Manix.
