Welcome To Venom Week At Comicon.com!

We love a goo monster. We love anti-heroes. We love Spider-Man. And we love Tom Hardy! Put them together, and you get the star of this week’s trilogy-capping film, Venom!

To get ready for the final film in the unexpected hit film series, we’re taking a look at what makes Venom, well, Venom all week long! We have lists, we have toys, we have looks at some of his comics. It’s a real good time, beginning to end.

But wait, who is this Venom guy anyways?

During Marvel’s seminal Secret Wars event (arguably the first ever superhero event crossover), Peter Parker’s classic red and blue costume was destroyed on Battleworld. It’s a whole thing that’s probably too complicated to get into here. Thanks to a bit of alien tech, Peter received an intelligent black costume that he assumed was a bit of advanced technology.

Once he returned to Earth, he learned it was actually an evil alien symbiote. After a struggle, the two separated, and Peter went on his way. The symbiote found Eddie Brock, a corrupt former reporter at the end of his rope whose corruption was revealed by Peter. The two, united by their hatred of Peter Parker and Spider-Man, bonded and thus Venom was born!

The character started as a villain- unpredictable, with intimate knowledge of Spider-Man, and invisible to Peter’s spider-sense. Through his history though, he’s gone from villain, to anti-hero, back to villain, through some complicated shenanigans involving other hosts, and finally now basically a demigod. The symbiote has also had multiple hosts other than Eddie, including Eddie’s ex-wife, various criminals and heroes- most notably Mac Gargan, aka the Scorpion- and Eddie’s own son, Dylan.

Seriously, the wikipedia page is more complicated than most characters twice his age.
