Jumping On: Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On October 30, 2024

by Brendan M. Allen

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, October 30th, 2024

Featured Series Premieres, One-Shots, and New Story Arcs:

Penguin Special #1, DC

Penguin has always been my favorite member of Batman’s Rogues Gallery. If you look at the caliber of actor that have been tapped to play the role, it speaks to just how important Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot is within the fabric of Batman mythos.

At first glance, the Penguin may seem like a harmless, if peculiar, businessman with a fondness for fine cuisine, tailored suits, and exotic birds. But those in Gotham’s underworld know that beneath the dapper attire and gentlemanly demeanor lies a calculating and ruthless criminal who isn’t afraid to take whatever he thinks he deserves. And should you happen to be in the way of something he wants, know that this bird is just as deadly as any other raptor.

Obviously timed to coincide with the new Max series, but is that’s what it takes for The Gentleman of Crime to get a decent special, I’m for it.

Sectaurs #1, Oni Press

I cannot tell you how excited I am about this one. When I was a kid, I had every one of these toys. Dargon with Dragonflyer, General Spydrax with Spiderflyer, Skulk, Trancula, Pinsor, Battle Beetle, Mantys, Graplor, Skito, Toxcid… all of them. I don’t know why these things didn’t do well, except that the action figure market was ridiculously saturated in the mid-1980s, but I was stupid happy back at NYCC 2022 to see that the Nacelle Company had plans for the franchise.

Oni has tapped writer Dennis Culver and artist Ramon Bachs to transport readers to the world of the Sectaurs: Warriors of Symbion.

Millenia past, on the distant planet Symbion, a genetic experiment failed, and evolution took a strange turn. The result of this cataclysm? A world where insects can grow to monstrous proportions, and whose inhabitants have taken on the weird and wondrous characteristics of insects themselves. Telepathically bonded in battle, Sectaurs warriors unite with their insect companions in the ultimate fight for survival.

The Savage Sword of Conan #5, Titan

The Savage Sword of Conan continues its triumphant return from Heroic Signatures and Titan Comics with a new King Conan arc by Jason Aaron

Featuring the first chapter of a two-part King Conan comic from Aaron and artist Geof Isherwood, a Young Conan tale from writer Michael Kogge and artist Dan Parsons, colossal covers from Joe Jusko and Alex Horley, art pin-ups, and more.
