TV Review: ‘Agatha All Along’ Returns To Its MCU Roots In Part One Of The Season(?) Finale

The great thing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe: it really is a place of superheroes. Despite the diversity in storytelling and all of the unique characters involved, they still adhere to the same laws of superhero storytelling. This was obvious with WandaVision, when it reverted to a CGI slugfest in the end, regardless of the creative sitcom twist it had in the beginning. Agatha All Along operates in much the same way. For much of this season, it gave audiences a very spooky and unique story of magic. But now that the journey is over, the superhero antics of the MCU have returned.
The penultimate episode begins as the remaining witches approach the last trial only to wind up right back where they started. Frustrated, they put their shoes back on and find themselves locked in a techno-dungeon version of Agatha’s (Kathryn Hahn) basement. The only way for them to escape is to obtain what they desired from The Witch’s Road. With Agatha’s help, Billy (Joe Locke) was able to bring his brother back to life in the body of a boy in the midst of drowning. The room then crumbled with Agatha still inside, but she refuses to die and begins fighting Death (Aubrey Plaza). Billy shows up to save her, but Death won’t leave without one of them. Agatha then sacrifices herself.
There’s a clear moment in the show that reminds fans of the series’ MCU roots. Once Billy shows up in his Wiccan outfit, it’s clear that the story has entered standard superhero territory. He juices Agatha up, returning her to power. And together, the two of them fight Death in a standard super-powered brawl. Seeing these two powerful witches literally battle the natural order of Death is a sight to behold and why the show is so fun.
