Not only the world’s greatest supervillain but the world’s greatest escapologist too, getting out of more sticky positions than a Vegas sex worker. With a little help from his new sidekick, of course. But is this young protege more Jason Todd than Dick Grayson?
In Nemesis: Rogues’ Gallery #4, new information comes to light about Nemesis’ past, and the brain behind this targeted hit on Nemesis is revealed. Writer and co-creator Mark Millar gives us a fast-paced issue – suitable for the action scenes it opens up with – but also a surprise or two with Nemesis’ final destination being the biggest one of all, setting up what could very well be a very entertaining and prescient finale next issue. It’s a reveal that also gives Millar the chance explore his dark humour, and test the readers’ boundaries too. No one really likes the elite, the mega-wealthy. And so in Nemesis aiming his intelligence at this group of individuals – even in fictional form – we are immediately on his side. Even a fictitious blow against these untouchables feels good. He may well be a degenerate, murderous criminal with no morals whatsoever, but he’s indirectly acting as a conduit in this series for many of us commoners’ own power fantasies. Once it’s revealed where he is heading, if you were ever undecided as to where your loyalties lie, they will definitely be with Nemesis after this humdinger of a cliffhanger.
The art of this particular Nemesis miniseries is grimy, gritty. A far cry from the world of wealth Nemesis and Rookie are infiltrating. But then the world Nemesis requests is dark, eroding and illegal. A world of shadows and dark alleys, with plans plotted and hatched under the cover of darkness. All aptly captured by artist Valeria Giangiordano with colours by Lee Loughbridge.
