Jumping On: Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off On November 20, 2024

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, November 20th, 2024.

Imbokodo #1, Dark Horse Comics

It’s a big week for Dark Horse series premieres, and two of them are in my review queue. From the solicit, Imbokodo sounds like an afrofuturist take on the samurai/Western genre. Upon reading, it has tropes from all those genres, mashed up in the best ways. 

Imbokodo is set in the land of the pyramid sun, where a single step of the Badimu is a thousand Muntu life times.

This is the land of Ndawo, home to the first Muntu. A thousand years after the great war between the Badimu that brought darkness to the land and birthed a new kind of Muntu, Ndawo remains divided. And recently, numerous young girls have gone missing from their villages, a trail of carnage left in their wake.

The first sequence of this issue gave me chills. So good. Go. Buy. Read.

Barstow #1, Dark Horse Comics

The second Dark Horse premiere that I’m pulling straight from my review queue is Barstow, because … weird horror. Also, Barstow. Hunter S. Thompson, and Del Taco. I pass through Barstow half a dozen times per year, and every single time, I shout “Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?” Just me? Word. 

From the solicit “At the center of the Mojave Desert, at the crossroads between hell and gone, lies Barstow.” That tracks. 

Archie Is Mr. Justice #1, Archie Comics

The first chapter in a four-issue mini that features the first appearance of Archie as the modern iteration of Mr. Justice. Each installment features a different POV and a different creative team. The debut issue is Jughead’s story, from writer Tim Seeley, artist Mike Norton, colorist Glenn Whitmore, and letterer Jack Morelli.
