Gift Guide For Gamers 2024: Kobold Press’ ‘Warlock Grimoire’
by Anton Kromoff
Welcome to the table,
I love Zines. There’s something about them that feels special, unique, like the publisher made you a home-cooked meal. There is not a lot of smoothing and polish. It’s great content, honest art, and it hardly ever leaves me feeling unhappy.
Of all the Zine flavors, TTRPG zines are the ones I love the most. They are one of the inspirations for me to publish Zines and eventually get to the point where I was working on lots of books and doing some really fun things in the space. All of this goodness comes from the team over at Kobold Press. This nostalgia and inspiration is a reason that the Warlock Grimoires are on my 2024 Gift Guide For Gamers.

The Warlock Grimoires are filled to the brim with monsters, items, subclasses, NPCs, and location lore for the Midgard TTRPG setting. For those playing in other worlds like The Forgotten Realms, Golarion, the Outer Seas, or your own Homebrew setting, the material is really easy to slip into your 5e and, honestly, 2024 Dungeons & Dragons settings, and fairly easy to fold into most D20 based fantasy settings if you are willing to bend and shift things about a tad.

Now Anton, you seem a little smitten by these books, you may say.
Look, let me tell you a little thing about old Anton. Those Encyclopedia Magica pictured above are books I have had since I was a little kid. I carried these things around like they were the highest of holy books, and they have survived travel and moving and relationship and floods and hurricane and tropical storms. These books are fundamental to my life and I keep my Kobold Press Warlock Grimoires on the shelf next to them because I like them nearly as much.

Each book collects a handful of the content that was presented in the original Zines along with new offerings that honestly feel more like they were supposed to be part of the original Zines and got cut for print size. There is so much here and they can really serve as inspiration or just plug and play pieces to your TTRPG games.

Kobold has a ton of really great material out there. You should really be shopping their site more if you have not checked them out yet. While I could go on all day, and you may indeed see more from Kobold press on this gift guide this holiday season, for now, go forth and grab a few of these Warlock Grimoires for yourself or someone you love.
Until next time, I put a shelf in my office above my desk just to hold my collection of TTRPG zines.
