SEMA 2024: Johnny Jimenez’ Custom ‘Deadpool’ Mustang

by Brendan M. Allen

You know Johnny Jimenez as the original toy expert from the History Channel’s Pawn Stars. His knowledge of vintage toys is an invaluable asset to Gold & Silver Pawn Shop’s buyers on several of the show’s most memorable episodes. Johnny and current Pawn Stars toy expert Steve Johnston run The Toy Shack and two One of Us Comics locations in Las Vegas, and are partners in several Vegas conventions, including Las Vegas ToyCon and Diecast SuperCon.

Johnny is a huge Deadpool fan, and when he partnered with El Paso’s Projekt Cars to customize a convertible 2024 Mustang for Katzkin Leather’s SEMA 2024 booth, The Merc with a Mouth was an obvious choice for the theme.

Katzkin provided the custom leather interior, featuring maroon and black leather and Deadpool’s iconic mask on the headrests. Here’s Katzkin Creative Director Miles Hubbard talking about the inspiration and execution of the build.

On a tour of Katzkin’s production facility back in August, I got to preview a miniature version of the booth on Miles’ desk. While Miles uses 1:18 scale model vehicles and matches the vehicle scale to the other booth elements for his mock-ups, it’s still shocking to see the fully realized, life-sized version. For reference, some of these exhibitor booths are 2,000+ square feet. That’s roughly the size of my house.

Additional sponsors on the vehicle include Blackvue (security cameras), Air Design (exterior body components), Schrader (TPMS sensors), Konig (Ampliform wheels), Toyo Tires (R888 performance tires), ST Suspension, and XKGlow (underbody glow kit). One of Us Comics also pitched in with a motion sensing wisecracking animatronic Deadpool head perched on the hood and two samurai swords that started the weekend displayed on the trunk, but ended up slung behind the driver’s seat when Johnny arrived and declared they had to be within arms reach for ease of deployment.
