Superstar Whilce Portacio Covers ‘Iron Man’ In New Variants
by Tony Thornley
Marvel’s armored Avenger has one of the greatest creative pedigrees in comics history. This winter, one of comics’ most legendary artists returns to cover Iron Man.
Pulitzer-winning journalist Spencer Ackerman and rising star Julius Ohta have just started their run, but things are already looking dire for Tony Stark. Roxxon has mystically corrupted the entirety of Stark’s armory. Now he has to create an armor from scratch that will change and evolve over the course of the series.
Whilce Portacio is best known for either his X-Men work or as one of the Image founders. In the 90’s though, he redesigned Iron Man for Marvel’s short lived Heroes Reborn. The series featured some of the most high tech designs the hero had ever seen.
“Whilce Portacio is one of the most unique and visually dynamic artists in the history of comics,” Ackerman said. “Even before we learned we’d be blessed with Whilce’s variant covers, Julius and I talked about how we could incorporate the tangle of cables that Whilce used to show how powerful the Heroes Reborn-era Iron Man suit was. You’ll see Julius directly homage Whilce’s legendary design in our third issue.”
