The Comicon Advent Calendar 2024 Day 22: ‘DC Comics Presents’ #67

by Tony Thornley

One of the things Christmas is all about is a man in red flying through the sky, delivering presents. Yes, that’s right, we’re talking about Superman, as the man of steel teams up with a familiar jolly red elf in DC Comics Presents #67.

Len Wein, E. Nelson Bridwell, Curt Swan, Murphy Anderson, Ben Oda, and Gene D’Angelo took advantage of DC Comics Presents’s team up format to bring in one of the greatest heroes in fiction (with a great cover by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez).

The story starts with Superman stopping a young boy from robbing a Salvation Army Santa. But as Superman digs deeper into what’s really going on he finds one of his greatest rogues is behind a plot that could ruin Christmas- the Toyman! As Kal-El leaves the Fortress of Solitude with young Timmy Dickens, Toyman springs a trap that renders Superman powerless.

But Toyman’s trap sprung at the wrong time. Superman isn’t the only one who lives at the North Pole.

Soon Superman and Timmy are working together with none other than Kris Kringle to save the day.

This story should be a classic, capturing the feel of the silver age and Christmas. Even better, Swan’s art makes the story feel timeless in a way that only his Superman can.

And that’s my last entry for this year’s advent calendar!

Merry Christmas!
