Adult Animation Revolution: Sander Joon’s ‘Sierra’

Animated by Sander Joon, Sierra tells the story of a boy whose father is obsessed with race cars. That obsession affects their relationship when the boy is accidentally turned into a car tire. This surreal comedy is inspired by Joon’s relationship with his own father and the tension between fulfilling parental wishes and being true to his own creative desires. Each of the characters in the short is modeled loosely after an animal — the grunting dialogue adds a layer of abstraction to the narrative. Overall this is a really strong and unique story and I look forward to seeing more work from Sander Joon.
