A Riveting Tale Of Magic, Destiny, And Discovery – Mad Cave Studios Announces ‘Sunder’

Mad Cave Studios has announced Sunder, an epic sci-fi fantasy adventure from animator Pierre-Alexandre Comtois, colorist Mark Englert, and letterer Buddy Beaudoin for May 2025.

With over 20 years in animation working on hits like Trolls, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and The Addams Family, Comtois brings unique expertise to Sunder. Inspired by European comics and long-form storytelling, this passion project combines rich world-building and vivid character expression with exceptional creativity.

When a mysterious book appears in the library of a young monk named Zeek, he must embark on a quest to find its rightful owner. Unbeknownst to him, another dark figure has been searching for this very book for a very long time, sending his minions across the known planets and using dark magic to find it at all costs. When this evil figure realizes the manuscript has finally resurfaced, it sets events in motion that will send Zeek on an adventure unlike anything he could have ever imagined–leading Zeek to discover his true identity and destiny.

“The story of Sunder began with the development of its main character, Zeek,” said Comtois of the project. “As I explored his identity and origins, the narrative gradually took shape, and once I determined the endgame, everything else fell into place. Influenced by my love for monsters, fantasy, and favorite works like Bone, Blacksad, Star Wars, Hellraiser, and Dark Souls, the story, its settings, and its characters were brought to life. Working with Mad Cave has been a dream; their deep care, trust in my vision, and unwavering support have made the process seamless, and I’m incredibly grateful for the partnership.”

A blend of adventure, fantasy, and sci-fi, Sunder is an immersive narrative aimed at fans of Bone, The Hobbit, and Star Wars. Sunder arrives in bookstores on May 6th, and comic shops on May 7th.
