‘Star Trek: Into The Unknown’ Tactical Miniatures Game Takes Us To The Final Frontier

How many of you heard the words “the final frontier” in your mind after reading that? For me it was the voice of Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). While I am fairly certain Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is my favorite of the Trek shows, the intro to Star Trek: The Next Generation is comfort food to my soul. You can imagine my excitement when the titans of tiny toys, my pals at WizKids, decided to drop Star Trek themed miniatures for their Star Trek: Into the Unknown tactical miniatures game.
The mini game currently accommodates two players. It has iconic Star Trek vessels sculpted and pre-painted to the high standards we have come to expect from WizKids and built to scale in relation to each other, so the feeling of grand space battles really comes alive at the table.
What I really dig about the first of these two offerings is that in one box you get the Federation Vs. Dominion Core Set. That collection comes with six minis, including a Galaxy-class starship with a detachable saucer section, a Defiant-class escort ship, a Constellation-class starship, two Jem’hadar fighters, and a Jem’hadar battle cruiser, along with a slew of tokens, markers, and a rulebook. It’s everything you need to play the game in one easy to grab and go package.
Even if you don’t plan to play the game, you get these iconic ship minis to make a rad display for your shelf collection.
Their second offering is the iconic U.S.S. Enterprise-D. Not only is this the central ship from Star Trek: The Next Generation, this mini in particular features a special metallic base paint adding a sleek sheen to the iconic ship, and yes, the saucer separates on this mini as well.
Fans of Trek and mini games are really going to have something to sink into with the first two offerings from WizKids. I am hopeful we will see other ships joining the collection. The thought of having a Klingon Bird of Prey or a Ferengi D’Kora-Class Marauder hitting the table for a fun afternoon of mini battles would be an absolute delight!
For now, being able to launch the Dominion War at your gaming table is a great way to dive into this fun new offering.
