WizKids Thaws Out An Epic ‘Mr. Freeze’ HeroClix

I think I was 10 when I first really gave Mr. Freeze any thought. Batman: The Animated Series had been on for just a little while. My love for comics and cartoons were maybe only matched by my love for pizza and Sword & Sorcery, so B:TAS was half of everything I was really excited about and a key focus of my day to day life.

I don’t remember what was happening when the episode “Heart of Ice” came on, but I know I was immediately transfixed by the strange spaceman-looking guy in a dome helm and robot suit. I understood he was supposed to be the villain, but there was something in his voice, he was so sad. In addition his wife was sick, and he was using a freeze ray to do all he could to make her better.

As a kid who understood medical issues, I really felt for this guy. When it was reveled that it was this wealthy jerk named Ferris Boyle who was willing to turn off the life saving equipment that was keeping Mr. Freeze’s wife alive, I, even as a kid, understood that people with money should do everything they can to help those who needed it. That is what “good guys” do.

It also totally made me a very morally confused little kid because “people who fight Batman are bad, right?” It made me consider the concept of the moral grey area, and that some stories were not what they seem in places like Gotham City.

Sure, Freeze went about it the wrong way, but he really was trying to just save his Nora. I think at the end of the adventure, even Batman felt like I did. He wanted to stop him from hurting himself and, of course, from hurting others, but deep down Batman really just wanted to help the guy and his wife.

The episode had to have made an impact on other people as well because it’s still one of the most acclaimed episodes of Batman: The Animated Series and it even won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program.

My pals at WizKids have immortalized this classic episode in a really cool way. The Mr. Freeze HeroClix figure in a snowglobe is a stunning new addition to the HeroClix collection. It comes on a 2×2″ base with Mr. Freeze holding a small musicbox version of his true love Nora Freeze. This is all encapsulated inside a cool snow globe atop the Clix base. You also get a character card and a fantastic little display box.
