MegaCon 2025: Heroes 4 Causes Draws Inspiration From Real Life Survivors

Big time creators and characters often get all of the attention at conventions, but for many, comic books are a labor of love. Even more than that, it’s an opportunity to bring attention to a cause using a beloved art form. It’s hard to find these comics and causes in the wild. The internet is a vast and loud place, and passion projects often get lost in the shuffle. But conventions allow creators a chance to pitch their work and the causes they support alongside. One such organization, Heroes 4 Causes, had a booth at MegaCon.

Heroes 4 Causes is a line of comics that drew inspiration from real kids battling grave illnesses. They offer several standalone superhero stories, each featuring a different character inspired by their subject. One such character is named Center Ice. Based on a boy named Weston who survived brain cancer, the story is about a disgruntled hockey team owner who uses a robot that transforms from a Zamboni into an unstoppable goalie. Unless the hockey team can score before time runs out, the villain will take over the team. Fortunately, Center Ice emerges and defeats the robotic goalie.

By all accounts, the comic is standard indie superhero material. But the story itself falls secondary to the story behind the comic. Back matter details Weston’s story and his journey as a cancer survivor. His love of hockey is what birthed this tale and the back matter also discusses how that played into the comic’s origins. Heroes 4 Causes donates a portion of all sales towards its various charitable efforts, and not just cancer. Each book has its own cause, featuring a superhero inspired by a real-life survivor. It’s a noble endeavor that can get drowned out online. But holding the book in person, and having it pitched to con-goers by one of the actual subjects the books are inspired by, allows comic fans to understand the power of the medium in a way that only a convention can bring.
