Advance Review: ‘The Seasons’ #2 Continue To Build Their World

Summary
The Seasons sisters are residents of New Gaulia. Their home is seeing visitation by a vibrant looking circus. Yet, Spring the youngest of the sisters is facing the question what lies underneath the colorful spectacle. Can she solve this mystery before bad things occur?
Overall
9.4/10Writer Rick Remender continues what might be one of the best homages to cartoonist Winsor McCay’s style of storytelling. There is plenty of whimsy and darkness in this tale and they go well with the surreal and real aspects. Remender also does a considerable amount of set-up in this issue without making it feel redundant. While it is too soon to call this a classic literary work it is definitely one that may just fall into that category. However, Remender’s scripting would be nothing without the rest of this series’ creative team.
Artist Paul Azaceta is responsible for the main cover which has a very unique and eye-catching design. This design is so unique that without the trade dress one might expect to see it in a gallery. There are also Easter eggs in this design that one can look back at and see with a different perspective after reading the story. When it comes to the interior visuals Azaceta seems to interpret whatever is in Remender’s script in a very surrealistic yet realistically whimsical style. This is particularly notable around the pages featuring Autumn Seasons. Part of this style is strictly in the way that Azaceta appears to apply what looks to this reviewer to be a very slight curve to his extremely thin line work. The only down side to this style is how poorly bare feet seem to turn out, at least on the interior pages.
Colorist Matheus Lopes and letterer Rus Wooton provide their hues and fonts, respectively. Both do an amazing job on this part of the tale. Although Wooton’s work appears a tad better in the realm of sizing than in the first issue. Lopes’ choice of colors obviously change depending on the scene and what the suggestion of shadow and light need to be. While both do necessary work the greatest amount of enhancement comes from Lopes’ color palettes to Azaceta’s art.
Artist Ramón K. Pérez creates a variant cover that is attention grabbing. Unfortunately, the odd positioning of Winter Seasons’ legs in relation to each other and the rest of her body keeps it from being a masterful piece.
The Seasons #2 comes out February 26th from Image Comics and Giant Generator.
