‘Dungeons & Dragons X Magic: The Gathering’ Takes Us To Lorwyn … And Its Dark Reflection Shadowmoor
by Anton Kromoff
Welcome to the table,
For a large chunk of my life Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons have gone hand-in-hand. Long before there were “coastal wizards,” long before 3rd edition D&D, long before we got the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms MTG set, or the Mythic Odysseys of Theros and Strixhaven D&D books, I was building jesters cap and Phyrexians into my regular TTRPG adventures.
MTG just goes with D&D like grilled goes with cheese and I think the fine folks over at Wizards of the Coast know that. This situational awareness has brought them to the conclusion that what the good people who play Dungeons & Dragons need is another helping of MTG X D&D.

So it brings me joy to tell you that D&D will be returning to a Magic setting — this time to the idyllic Lorwyn, and its dark reflection, Shadowmoor.
The announcement was made during a panel discussion that provided a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes into the epic D&D x MTG crossovers, with some titans of the industry as panelists included Jess Lanzillo, James Wyatt, Principal Game Designer for Dungeons & Dragons, and Meris Mullaley, Senior Worldbuilding Design Manager for MTG.
The team also showcased concept art (image above) from Jesper Ejsing, who worked on the Lorwyrn setting for the card block.

I’m a fan of the block of cards this setting is based on as it has some really fun potential for cool creatures and playable species. Additionally, Wayne Reynolds is one of my favorite TTRPG artists and the card art for Ashling the Pilgrim is easily in my top ten as far as card art goes so I’m hopeful we will get even more lore built off the elementals.
We don’t know much about the book just yet, but with convention season ramping up I’m sure we will have more to share soon.
Until next time, I’m so stoked for these new books. The Faerie and Merfolk in this setting are so unique and well realized that I can’t wait to see what the game designers do with them. This is going to be one rad book I am sure!
