Fight To The Death With ‘Exquisite Corpses: Trading Card Game’

by Olly MacNamee

Exquisite Corpses #1 from creators James Tynion IV (Something is Killing the Children, The Department of Truth) and Michael Walsh (The Silver Coin, Universal Monsters: Frankenstein), in collaboration with a some of the best writers, artists in the business, is out this May with a comapnion trading card game just announced in Tynion IV’s regular Tiny Onion newsletter and Image Comics.

“Players of the upcoming TCG will be able to wield the weapons of their favorite killers from the comics, and fans can start collecting early with cards found exclusively within polybagged Cover C variants of each issue. With gameplay designed by co-creator and frequent Magic: The Gathering artist Walsh, Exquisite Corpses: The Game has been developed in tandem with the comic series.”

Tynion IV discussed how the game came about from a writers’ summit:

“Michael showed up at that first story summit, six months before the rest of the team was there. He was like, ‘I think I have a game mechanic,’ and started drawing on all of these little dry-erase cards, actually creating the stats for each of the characters in front of us. And then we played a version of the game right there at the summit, and it was incredibly fun. And we knew immediately that this could be something really, really cool.”

Tiny Onion Director of Editorial Eric Harburn, added:

“Whether this is their very first card game or they attend weeklies at their local game shop, fans will be able to pick up and play Exquisite Corpses: The Game and have a blast. This is a widely accessible game with deceptive complexity; fans will be able to play as their favorite killer from the series, with each killer possessing unique skills that can harmonize or clash with the other killers in play. No two games are alike, and trust us: you’ll want to play more than one.”

Walsh spent a good time roadtesting the game with The Barn Burners playtester group:

“My goal is to make this a game that fans can throw in their bag and take to a party, or throw in their luggage and play after a day at a convention. We wanted to create a game that is easy to pick up, but hard to put down.”

Whil ethe game won’t be avialable until after the initail thirteen-issue season readers can get their hands on exclusive cards early by picking up the polybagged Cover C variant of each issue, which will include a different card each time.
