Advance Review — ‘You’ll Do Bad Things’ #2 Picks Up The Pace

There’s been a lot of talk recently about Republican lawmakers being told to avoid town hall meetings in their districts, so they don’t have to make excuses for the administration’s questionable decisions. While Seth Holms isn’t a politician, it’s easy to see why avoiding the public is often the right thing to do.

Holms, the protagonist in You’ll Do Bad Things, is in the process of writing his second book – a decade after winning acclaim for his true-crime story. When he announces his intention to craft a romance for his sophomore outing, the moderator and crowd at a book signing don’t take the news well. To make matters worse, Seth thinks he sees a serial killer at the event. Talk about tough rooms.

This second issue of the limited series is a considerable improvement from the first. Artist Adriano Turtulici kicks things off with a brutal murder that is truly shocking. Fortunately his use of color – giving the entire scene a hot pink hue instead of blood red – prevents the panels from becoming overly gory. Still, it’s an effective way to kick off the issue.

And he concludes the issue with a heart-pounding chase scene devoid of words. Turtulici is clearly an effective storytelling by himself, because his use of non-conventional angles gives the pursuit a cool warped perspective.

Writer Tyler Boss kicks things into higher gear as well – a welcome departure from a ho-hum first issue. Frankly, what the team really needed was a double-sized first issue that included this part of the story. It would have changed the entire feel for readers and made You’ll Do Bad Things more of a must read. The way it was presented originally likely had those readers questioning whether to come back for more.

If this follow-up issue is any indication, though, the faith they showed in the creative team was well placed.
