Adult Animation Revolution: ‘The Gaslight District’ Episode 1

I was intrigued by the unique art style of The Gaslight District and the premiere episode didn’t disappoint. I love how the animation can evoke a doughy claymation quality, and then shift into more fluid and snappy character animation. Gaslight District seamlessly blends the best aspects of Tex Avery and Aardman animation to create a really unique look for CG animation.
The Gaslight District is yet another edgy cartoon with pseudo-Biblical mythology. However, unlike Vivienne Medrano’s Hellaverse, the angels are more vulture-like and we’re exploring a zombified post-flood world. Even when pulling from well-established mythologies, The Gaslight District is able to take classic concepts and make them unique for the show.
The characters of Mel, Breadhead, Butcher, and Mud are an instantly lovable family of monsters. I’ve seen many action cartoons, and longtime readers of Comicon know that I’m very opinionated about action. Gaslight District left my jaw on the floor with the inventiveness and kineticism of their action set-pieces. The camera takes us on a rollercoaster while maintaining visual clarity– Bravo!
