FCBD — Godzilla From IDW Previews Three New Stories In Brave New Worlds

Godzilla is the King of Monsters! I feel strongly enough about this our entire bullpen, most of our readers, anyone who follows us on social media, and random strangers who wear that particular shade of green or have something resembling spines at least has some passing understanding that I, Anton, love the giant lumbering kaiju in a way that could almost be classified as religious.

So naturally, when IDW’s Godzilla book for Free Comic Book Day dropped on our desks the editors felt it only right to allow me the privilege of reviewing it (Ed. Note: Anton asked politely and enthusiastically). Granted no one was prepared to deal with the non stop babbling that would come and the endless speculation of what each Easter egg, panel break, and story bump could mean for the various upcoming titles IDW will be bringing to the table later this year.

The first of the three stories featured in this issue is a teaser for Godzilla written by Tim Seeley with art by Nikola Čižmešija, colors by Marissa Louise, and letters by Brian Kolek. This story sees a squad of Godzilla fighting heroes that include Dr. Rumi Chiba, Nuki, Incense, the all important and double delightful Jet Jaguar, and Commander Riviera making up the G-Force team, a group who’s mission is to stop Godzilla from doing what Godzilla does best.

The story is a good introduction to the characters even if it offers little more information than what you would find on the backs of 1990s trading cards. The art is phenomenal, Godzilla looks amazing each time we see him, and the introduction of Jacen Braid, a man who claims to be the one who is “gonna kill Godzilla” is enough that I am going to stick around in the homes that he finds out how very very wrong is is about to be.

The next offering in the issue is from my pals Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan, with art from Pablo Tunica and letters by Brian Kolek. This preview is for Godzilla Escape The Dead Zone. This story is a ton of fun and sets the tone for what seems to be an adventure focused on a human kaiju hybrid that will see continuation in the ongoing series out later this year. Honestly of the three offerings this one really has it’s hooks in me because the premise is very “lone wanderer” in nature and I dig those kind of stories.

The last of the three stories in this FCBD issue is a preview of Starship Godzilla. Written by Chris Gooch, with art by Oliver Ono, and letters by Brain Kolek, this preview showcases an adventure where what I can only describe as space mercenaries who are very Cowboy BeBop coded in style are stealing rare kaiju eggs and then running off with them in a Mecha-Godzilla complete with some kind of Robotech-looking backpack. I have zero idea of what the actual story of this series is but it is a random new space take on things and gives me all sorts of Voltron feels if I’m being completely honest.

So there ya go, three previews in one FCBD Godzilla. I think for the most part these are fun new spins on The King and should be cool to keep up with as they develop.
