Welcome to Doctor Who week at Comicon.com!
In November of 1963 the British Broadcasting Company debuted a new program about a quirky old man, his granddaughter, two companions and his magnificent blue box. The character and his world gained popularity, spreading worldwide relatively quickly after its debut. Now, Doctor Who is one of the most recognizable brands and IPs across the globe, with episodes having been broadcast in at least 94 countries in the franchise’s 62 years.
The Doctor is a Time Lord, a race of powerful beings that have mastered time travel and have the ability to regenerate after grievous bodily harm, making them functionally immortal. While the Time Lords are often amoral and aloof at best, and malicious dictators at worst, the Doctor broke free of them centuries ago, using his ship — the TARDIS — his smarts and (usually) a simple sonic screwdriver to defend the innocent, stop monsters, and protect the galaxy, usually in the company of a non-Time Lord companion (or a handful of them). And conveniently for viewers, those companions usually hail from 20th and 21st century Earth.
This week, the Comicon team is going to take a look at Doctor Who, the franchise’s history and impact on pop culture, and have some fun with it. We’re going to talk about our favorite Doctors and stories from across pop culture media.
So throw your sonic in your pocket, grab your scarf and hat, and lace up your Chuck Taylors. We’re going to the end of time and back, and we’re happy to have you along for the ride.
