Crowdfunding Comics: The Fantasy Dream Worlds Of Tony Sandoval

The works of Tony Sandoval have been among my favorite discoveries during my time writing for Comicon. I distinctly remember seeing a copy of Water Snakes at my local comic shop. Both visually and story wise, it defies traditional categorization. What starts as a cute romance between two girls slowly evolves into an epic battle to rival 300. We are given the dreamlike serenity of a picture book mixed with the guts and glory of a Grimm’s Fairy Tale.

From my interviews, I was pleased to learn that Sandoval is a gentle and introspective soul. He has a wide array of interests and influences that inform his artwork including: Edgar Allan Poe, Simon Bisley, Hieronymus Bosch, Bruegel, Gustav Klimt, and Taiyo Matsumoto. Sandoval’s surreal comics are a masterclass in showing how one can communicate truth without realism.

Now via crowdfunding, The Fantasy Dream Worlds of Tony Sandoval are being distributed by Magnetic Press. English speaking audiences can finally get a hold of Sandoval’s acclaimed titles including some that have been long out of print. The crowdfunding campaign includes Sandoval’s surreal coming of age stories: Water Snakes, 1000 Storms, DoomBoy, and A Glance Backward. Also available is Rendez-vous in Phoenix an autobiographical account of his journey crossing the Mexican border for love. Lastly, we have The Dragons of Paris written in collaboration with Joann Sfar — in which medieval dragons awaken from their secret underground hiding places after centuries of secrecy.
