First Look At Duncan Jones’s Upcoming ‘Rogue Trooper’ Movie

Duncan Jones’s Rogue Trooper movie is out later this year, and we’ve got the first images from the movie, an animated adaptation of one of the truly classic 2000 AD characters…

Written and directed by Duncan Jones, whose filmography includes Moon, Source Code, Warcraft, and Mute, and who’s been a huge 2000 AD fan for the longest time, this one really does feel like it’s a labour of love, with Jones saying this about the movie…

2000 AD offers a very different flavour of comic action: Political and brutal at times, but always with a Pythonesque twinkle in the eye. Dredd (2012) was a taste of what 2000 AD has to offer and now we get to show the world another side of the beast. It is a genuine privilege to be given the opportunity to make Rogue Trooper.

Jones will be appearing at San Diego Comic Con on 25th July (2-3pm PDT at the Rebellion stand, booth number 2121) to meet fans and sign a limited run of the Rogue Trooper hero image. He had this to say about it all…

To really get people talking, we’ve had four still images offered up as a tantalising tease for what to expect as a first look at the upcoming movie. In addition to that shot of Aneurin Barnard as Rogue, there’s Jemaine Clement and Matt Berry as scheming battleground looters Mr Brass and Mr Bland, a look at the world of Nu Earht and the war machines that roam it with a gigantic war vehicle, and two Souther soldiers, lost, traversing the toxic wasteland and battlefield.

Rogue Trooper is an animated science fiction feature from Rebellion and Liberty Films, that utilises cutting-edge Head Mounted Camera (HMC) technology and expertise of Motion Grinder. Imagery and animation partner Treehouse Digital (The Well) processed and applied the data to the characters within Unreal Engine 5, handing over to Liberty Films’ own VFX and animation teams to light and finalise, bringing the incredible world of Rogue Trooper to life.

The film will tell the story of ’19, a ‘Genetic Infantryman’, who finds himself the sole-survivor of an invasion force. Desperate to track down the traitor who sold him and his comrades out, the super soldier is accompanied by three killed-in-action squad mates, whose personalities have been stored in his gun, helmet and backpack.’

As you should know, Rogue Trooper was created by Dave Gibbons and writer Gerry Finley-Day, and first appeared in the pages of 2000 AD in Prog 228, way back in 1981. Since then, the character’s gone on to become one of 2000 AD‘s most iconic characters.

The cast also includes Hayley Atwell, Jack Lowden, Reece Shearsmith, Diane Morgan, Alice Lowe, Asa Butterfield, and Sean Bean.
