SDCC 2025: ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ And ‘Angel’ Make For A Dynamite Entertainment Pair; Kelly Thompson To Write

It is day zero at Comic-Con International: San Diego and Dynamite is opening the show with a big announcement.
The company revealed Wednesday morning that it has secured the licenses to both Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Taking the creative reins on the new titles will be Kelly Thompson. The two books will be interconnected and represent a new vision of the characters’ continuing adventures. Both are based, of course, on the Warner Bros. Television series. Buffy ran from 1997-2003 and focused on Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), a young woman destined to be the Slayer of her era — not that Buffy is thrilled by the prospect. Angel, meanwhile, starred David Boreanaz as the titular vampire who moved to Los Angeles following the end of his relationship with Buffy. There, he becomes embroiled with a literal infernal law firm and faces the Apocalypse. Both shows spawned comics from various publishers over the years, but have been missing from comic shop shelves for some time.
“In my early days trying to figure out how to be a writer and what stories mattered to me and why — no heroine quite broke through for me like Buffy Summers,” Thompson said in a statement. “She was somehow everything my young geek heart had always wanted but hadn’t known to ask for. Something about that delicate alchemy of horror, fantasy, and comedy paired with a hero so pure of heart and yet flawed and relatable was … impossible to deny. I fell deeply in love with Buffy, and following that, her whole world. Her ex-boyfriend is now a supernatural detective in Los Angeles you say? Inject it directly into my veins! But unlike a lot of other worlds I loved, the world of Buffy and Angel somehow never fell to the wayside. I could always come back to it and find something new, or something I’d missed, or something I needed. And I hope this new story we’re telling can do the same for old and new fans everywhere.”
