10/10If you’ve been following the resurrection of Nemesis over the past two mini series by co-creator and writer Mark Millar, you will have noticed an upscaling of his malevolent plans. Like any decent super villain, world domination will eventually grab your attention. And it would seem that’s what Nemesis is aiming for, and in more than one way too, given his current secret identity is as billionaire tech bro and would-be spacefaring pioneer, Hans Berg. An ego-driven corporate Master of the Universe with no real care for anyone. Hmmm, he sounds so, so familiar, doesn’t he?
But, beneath this contemptible charade lies a man on a mission. And a plan that’s going global with some rather remarkable fireworks along the way. The opening scene, set in new York, is like Die Hard With a Vengeance on steroids. A double page spread of the carnage wrought on New York can hardly be contained in a double page. The cover kinda gives its away, but you get the idea. More big ass, blockbuster mayhem and murder from everyone’s favourite mass murdering homicidal maniac.
Meanwhile, the FBI are doing their best to keep up with him. But if you’re a regular reader, you really don’t imagine they’ll get anywhere fast. It’s just a matter of how they’ll get found out, not if. Millar gives us plenty of juicy tidbits to jump start this latest series, with plenty of mystery regarding his motivations. Even his evil-Alfred — Margot — hasn’t got a clue! The game is on and we’re left guessing.
Joining Millar on art duties for this latest miniseries is artist Matteo Scalera, offering up impeccable art and a Nemesis with a shit-kicking grin you just want to see wiped off his face. Scalera seems to rely on just the one width of pen when inking, creating detailed and delicate artwork that is better accentuated and given weight and depth by colourist Giovanna Niro. A great partnership that gives us a Nemesis far too sure of himself and a case that never stops fluttering.
A dynamic first issue that’s fast-paced script and globe-trotting terror pulls you in from the first page, and leaves you keen to know what he’ll do next. And why.
