Popeye The Sailor Man Sails Into ‘I Hate Fairyland’ #45 From Image Comics

by Olly MacNamee

Eisner Award-winning creator Skottie Young is bringing Popeye the Sailor Man to I Hate Fairyland #45, featuring guest cartoonist Jay Fosgitt (Marvel Fairy Tales, Bodie Troll), this October from Image Comics.

Popeye has been in the public domain for a few years now, but I think this is the first time he’s been used in such a high-profile comic book series. But then, Young has included other public domain characters in cameos also, such as Dorothy and Toto from The Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio, Peter Pan, and Steamboat Willie’s Mickey Mouse.

Here’s the plot:

“In I Hate Fairyland #45, Gert and Larry sail the oceans blue in search of a dastardly sea beast that may hold the key to Gert returning home, but they find themselves outmatched and in need of help… from none other than Popeye the Sailor Man.”

And Young discusses Jay Fosgitt:

“Jay [Fosgitt] is a great cartoonist and we’re lucky to have him on board with us. I know one of Jay’s favorite characters is Popeye, and he can draw the heck out of him! And it just so happens that Popeye entered the Public Domain recently so it seemed fitting. I Hate Fairyland is the perfect book to be able to grab onto things like that run with it because anything can happen in my book!”

I Hate Fairyland #45 is out on Wednesday, October 15th, with the following covers:

  • Cover A by Fosgitt
  • Cover B Red variant by Fosgitt
  • Cover C 1:10 copy incentive by Young
