The John Cassaday Collection Comic Art Showcase Auction Set For November 6

by Erik Amaya

Since the untimely death of artist John Cassaday, Dynamite CEO and Publisher Nick Barrucci, along with Albert Moy, has been assisting Cassaday’s sister, Robin, and partner, Tina, putting his work in order and making it available to keep them afloat. Now, the team has partnered up with Heritage Auctions to make some of the artists original work available to fans in the continued effort to support his survivors.

As part of the plan, Heritage will be retaining Buyer’s Premium while Cassaday’s family will received what is known as the “hammer price” — that is, the price the piece of art sells at.

“Most of the comics world knows his creativity and art, which stands on its own,” Barrucci said. “Others were as fortunate as myself to have been friends with John, and he was a shining light as a person as well as an artist. And for those who did not know him personally, he blessed the industry with his art, with the passion he brought to the comics he worked on. And his art will keep his flame alive forever.”

Among the pieces available: the cover to Planetary #1. According to Barrucci, it was a personal favorite of the artist as it marked a major leap in his career. and he declined offers to buy the original art throughout his life. Additionally, pages from the debut issue and other covers will also be available. Beyond Planetary, work from Captain America, Astonishing X-Men, Action Comics, Legion Worlds, Lone Ranger, Buck Rogers, and more. Here’s a sample:

This includes Marvel Fanfare covers from Michael Golden and Kerry Gammill, New Frontier work by Darwyn Cooke, Russ Heath‘s Lone Ranger, Captain America by Gene Colan and Captain America by Jack KirbyJim Lee, Liam Sharp, and others have also donated pieces to the auction.

The lots are available to look at right now on Heritage’s site with bidding underway until the showcase auction on November 6th.
