New Books From Dark & Golden — Early Dave Gibbons, Unpublished Carol Swain, More Kevin Woodcock
by Richard Bruton
Three new books from Dark & Golden Books – vintage Dave Gibbons, more Kevin Woodcock, and previously unpublished work from the great Carol Swain.
Dark & Golden have already published some strange stuff – but wonderfully strange stuff, including early work from some familiar names in UK comics – Kevin O’Neill, Peter Milligan, Brett Ewins, Savage Pencil, Simon Harrison, Kevin Woodcock, and Carol Swain.
Now, time for their next trio of releases. First, there’s Dave Gibbons‘s very first professional comics work, from 1971, The Dead Are Awake and Walking. Then you have another collection of Kevin Woodcock‘s criminally overlooked cartoons in I’ll Be Glad When Today is Over, collecting work from the pages of Private Eye, Punch and the Spectator. Finally, Another Way Out by Carol Swain is a collection of three previously unpublished pieces – Vast New Market, Coming of Age, and a sequence from Mwnci Siwt, her forthcoming graphic novel.
Yet again, Dark & Golden are living up to their mission of ‘Charting a less travelled course through the history of British comics, finding and celebrating mislaid and forgotten classics for the audience of today in new high-quality editions.’

The Dead Are Awake And Walking by Dave Gibbons – released 17th November 2025 (72 pages, 176mm x 125mm)
“Dark & Golden Books are once more excited to present one of the foundational comic works by Dave Gibbons as we re-present The Dead Are Awake and Walking from the cult classic digest series, Pocket Chiller Library. Dark and Golden books are pleased to return this lost milestone to print.
Originally published in 1971, The Dead Are Awake and Walking is the very first professional comics work by Dave Gibbons. A story of creeping dread, of the uncanny and of betrayal, it heralded the debut of a major comics talent.
Newly scanned from the best available pages from multiple copies of the original comic, with a new introduction by Gibbons himself, and an essay on the Pocket Chiller Library comics by Dark and Golden’s Douglas Noble.”
