Wizards Of The Coast & Capcom Team Up For ‘MTG X ‘Monster Hunter’ Secret Lair Drops

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

Magic: The Gathering has been stretching its brilliant multiverse-spanning tendrils out into various pop-culture worlds, both in core releases and through the fine work the folks over at Secret Lair have been doing.

Today, it hit my desk that the world of Monster Hunter is going to be joining the deck-building, mana-tapping pastime this December, thanks to the Secret Lair.

Let’s get into it!

This upcoming Superdrop has been whispered about in the various corners of the hobby for a bit now, but nothing rock solid has come of those rumors up and to this point. However, now, the wait is over, and we have a better understanding of what rad offerings we are going to be able to look forward to this December.

This collaboration is going to deliver the scale and styled artistry of Monster Hunter through the lens of delightful MTG cards for a drop that is going to, if my assumptions are correct, be highly sought after. I’m basing this assumption on both the collector’s blood that runs through my own veins and the absolute feral behavior social media has shown me of those seeking the recent MTG sets have been engaged in.

The Hunt drop features monsters on non-creature spells that will fit nicely into Commander decks. The drop is said to have one spell of each color and includes 1 Blind Obedience: Malzeno + Qurio from Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, 1 Snap: Kushala Daora introduced in Monster Hunter 2, 1 Village Rites: Magnamalo introduced in Monster Hunter Rise, and Tobi-Kadachi from Monster Hunter: World, 1 Mizzium Mortars: Yian Garuga introduced in Monster Hunter Generations, and 1 Tooth and Nail: Azure Rathalos introduced in the Japan-exclusive Monster Hunter G and Seregios from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

The artists in this drop include Daniel Romanovsky, Kotakan, Simon Dominic, ガマゾウ/Gamazo, and 山宗/SANSYU. Some seriously talented skill is going into these cards, and I’m here for it!

The Monsters drop is going to feature some epic Legendary Creatures from MTG, with curated attention that pairs each monster with one of the mana color identities to really make this drop feel weighted and intentional in a really rad way.

This drop has 1 Nezahal, Primal Tide: Lagiacrus from Monster Hunter Tri, 1 Drakuseth, 1 Maw of Flames: Rathalos from Monster Hunter, 1 Sarulf, Realm Eater: Zinogre introduced in the Japan-exclusive Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, 1 Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire: Nergigante from Monster Hunter: World, and 1 Ziatora, the Incinerator: Fatalis introduced in Monster Hunter.

The artists on this drop are Brock Grossman, oxygen, Toy(e), Wayne Wu, and 獣道/KEMONOMICHI.

The second Monster set, Monster II is going to feature more iconic monsters, including 1 Razaketh, the Foulblooded: Gore Magala from Monster Hunter 4 , 1 Amareth, the Lustrous: Velkhana from Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, 1  Wasitora, Nekorus Queen: Nargacuga from Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, my favorite from this whole drop and probably my favorite Monster Hunter monsters hands down, and 1 Kalamax, the Stormsire: Brachydios from Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

The artists on this drop are going to be Daniel Romanovsky, Wayne Wu, and 佐久間竜一/Ryuichi Sakuma.

Until next time, this set is going to make a ton of people happy, and I hope you are one of them!
