Adding A Little Bit Of Chaos — Reviewing ‘Absolute Flash’ #9

Nothing is truly as it seems, especially when it comes to Project Olympus and the schemes of Doctor Elenore Thawne.

The next chapter beings as pieces start to move closer together in Absolute Flash #9 from Jeff Lemire, Nick Robles, Adriano Lucas, and Tom Napolitano.

There are some really interesting moments spread through this issue. Nothing is really spectacular or as mind-bending as some of the previous issues have been. Wally West’s connection to reality seems to be cracking some as other-worldly forces are connecting with him. Thawne’s machinations go deeper than expected, as the Rogues-Flash team-up hits some pretty big snags.

Overall, I enjoyed what was done here, even if it felt a bit sparse at times.

Mixing up the Rogues dynamic with the Flash is a fun element, as was how the connection between Wally and Grodd continues to pay off, both plot wise and emotional depth wise. I think Lemire is overall handling the mystery elements and the growth of the overarching themes well. This felt like it could have been cut down and just been part of an issue in some respects, but not in a bad way.

It’s just an economical way that could have led us to be closer to the big reveals in a faster manner. Not that I mind titles taking their time. I’m just genuinely quite curious to find out what this was all about. Hopefully once that is done we can get some more Flash out and about stories, because I will say I was a bit disappointed the Flash on the run but doing good detour didn’t go on as long as I hoped.

As noted, there wasn’t as many big graphic moments to really sink into here. That being said, Robles did his usual great work to bring it all to life. Very slick and dense, with a lot of inherent movement crackling under the surface at all times. A few pages and panels felt a little rushed without the full polish that is expected with the artist’s style. Nothing took away from the work beyond being noticeable on a smaller scale.

A lighter feeling is always present within the color palette found on the pages. Lucas seeds in a very natural-esque style setting color style to really give that good foundation to build upon. Flashier vibrant colors are added to bring out the fantastic on the page, while darker tones keep the overall world aesthetic at the forefront.

Variety is the key to a lot of visuals, especially with lettering in comic books. Adding various modifications like style and color can boost any letters and their desired effect. This is never in question when Napolitano is the letterer. Crafting each element with grace and care, bringing out the most in any voice or sound element needed for the pages.
