Dynamite’s ‘ThunderCats’ TTRPG Thunders Past Its Goal
by Anton Kromoff
Welcome to the table,
Thunder, thunder, THUNDERCATS! HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
As of the time of writing this, Dynamite Entertainment’s Kickstarter for the ThunderCats: The Roleplaying Game has blown past its funding goals by over $150,000. This is a titanic feat worthy of praise and applause!
It makes total sense that this project is doing as well as it is, as the hunger for nostalgia, coupled with the accessibility of the Dungeons & Dragons 5e/2014 system, makes a ThunderCats TTRPG an instant standout on the gaming shelf.
What I really admire about this project is that it is set to bring players and storytellers to Third Earth, providing character creation rules for ThunderCats, Mu’tants, and touted “other inhabitants” of this well-known pop culture landscape.
As someone who regularly home-brewed the trappings of ThunderCats, SilverHawks, and the TigerSharks in the TTRPG space, I can’t wait to see what the game designer who worked on this cooked up. The Sword of Omens and Lion-O’s gauntlet, or at least artifacts with very similar powers, have often shown up in my home game. I really want to see how someone else has designed them in an “official” capacity.
This whole thing feels super special. Currently, there is a little over a week to go before the campaign closes. If you are a fan of the ThunderCats or rad TTRPG, you may want to head over to this link and check it out.
I know I am counting the days until I can get the book into my hand for a deep dive into all the various mechanics, subclasses, creatures, and feats, just to see what this iconic landscape looks like at the table.
Until next time, I’m so serious when I tell you Lynx-O armed with the Sword of Omens was the inspiration for the main quest giving NPC in my home game for most of my teenage years so this book is something I need to sit down with and pour through because I’m so stoked to see what work has been done to capture the tone and magics of the world setting.
