Oliver Stone’s ‘The Doors’ Brings Val Kilmer And Jim Morrison To 4K UHD

The Doors of Perception are about to be reopened in 4K UHD.
Oliver Stone‘s 1991 music biopic The Doors — starring Val Kilmer as brooding, doomed singer-poet Jim Morrison — is making its debut in the format next month.
Filled with Stone’s requisite visual and sonic overkill (see also JFK, Natural Born Killers, and Nixon), the film depicts the rise and fall of the titular band and its magnetic leader from 1960s L.A. to ’70s Paris as they explore new sounds, new drugs, and scandals galore. Eventually, the lifestyle catches up with them, leading to Morrison’s tragic demise. As usual, Stone assembles a murderers’ row of supporting players, including Meg Ryan, Kyle MacLachlan, Frank Whaley, Kevin Dillon, Crispin Glover, and Michael Madsen. The eye-popping cinematography will alone make the 4K worth it. The Doors was shot by Stone regular Robert Richardson, who has gone on to shoot several Martin Scorsese films and all of Quentin Tarantino‘s post-millennium work.
Special features include a new intro from Stone, and a new documentary called Val, Oliver & Jim: The Making of Morrison. Legacy special features include a commentary from Stone, 14 deleted scenes introduced by Stone, documentaries, interviews, trailers, and more.
The late, great Kilmer can also be seen in another recent 4K UHD upgrade, 1992’s underrated thriller Thunderheart.
