The Lessons Begin In ‘Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord’ Trailer

by Erik Amaya

The story of former Sith apprentice Maul (Sam Witwer) continues in the upcoming Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord animated series. And Disney has released a trailer for the program that not only showcases the abilities of Lucasfilm Animation, but Maul’s new apprentice.

Filling in the years between his defeat on Mandalore and his ultimate fate shortly before the events of the original Star WarsShadow Lord sees Maul rebuilding his private empire while trying to impart his version of the Sith philosophy to a young Force-senstive Twi’lek. Many fans believe she will turn out to be a new version of Darth Talon from Dark Horse’s future-set Star Wars comic books. It remains to be seen if that is the case, but in the meantime, the animation here is just stunning.

We happened to see a version of this trailer at last year’s Star Wars Celebration in Japan and the new textures applied to the techniques the company has been using since Star Wars: The Clones Wars was the thing we noticed immediately. It feels like a step forward even as it maintains continuity with the visual look of Lucasfilm’s other 3D animated Star Wars shows. Okay, Star Wars: Resistance was a departure, but you get our meaning.

No matter the style, though, we’re happy to see Witwer voicing Maul again and await the debut of Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord on April 6th
