Streaming And Screaming: ‘Redline’
by Tito W. James
Redline is the directorial debut of Takeshi Koike, known for his stellar series of Lupin the IIIrd OVAs. Its premise: “a daredevil driver and his secret love face off in the most dangerous and exciting car race in the universe.” The film has become a cult-classic among anime fans, I would even go so far as to say that in terms of gorgeous, hand-drawn animation, it stands shoulder-to shoulder with Akira and deserves to be just as iconic. Koike created Redline as a love letter to Mad Max and Star Wars; the result is a thrilling, high-speed interplanetary racing film with a soundtrack that is second to none. The film is 100% hand-drawn, took seven years to make, and each frame of Redline could be its own dazzling Pop Art poster.
Redline is now streaming on Tubi.
