Streaming And Screaming: ‘Dark City’
by Tito W. James
Dark City is a cult classic sci-fi horror film directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow) and written by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins). The picture blends the aesthetics of film noir and abstract German expressionism to create an uncanny urban nightmare. Per the plot synopsis, “a man struggles with memories of his past, including a wife he cannot remember, in a nightmarish world with no sun and run by beings with telekinetic powers who seek the souls of humans.” The film is rich with ideas and symbolism that would sadly be overshadowed by the success of The Matrix. Now that 1990s films are considered vintage, it’s well worth rediscovering Dark City.
