Venom Gets A Radical New Look In June’s ‘Venom’ #259

Mary-Jane Watson and the Venom symbiote have been partners for well over a year now. In June, MJ gets a Venom look all her own, debuting in Venom #259.
Al Ewing and Carlos Gomez have blazed a new, very superheroic trail for Venom since last year’s launch of All-New Venom (since re-titled and renumbered to just Venom). While Venom was a major source of trauma for MJ previously, she and the symbiote have grown together and confronted their pasts — both together and separately. Their time together has seen MJ grow into her new more heroic role, and has been both of them sever ties with toxic exes.
But this spring, they face their toughest challenge yet, and in the wake of that, MJ fully embraces her new destiny.
In the aftermath of the upcoming Death Spiral crossover, Mary Jane Watson and Peter Parker have a long overdue heart-to-heart … but when the costumes go on, Venom and Spider-Man have some unfinished business! Now that her secret is fully out in the open, MJ completely embraces her symbiote strength, leading to a very big change for Venom and MJ’s bond!
“MJ’s new look represents a ‘levelling up’ of sorts,” Ewing explained. “After her most serious challenge as Venom so far, it represents a reassessment of her relationship with the symbiote — just in time for an even bigger threat looming on the horizon.”
Venom has been a lot of fun since the relaunch. It’s been the most traditional superhero story Ewing has written in a long time, and that’s been to its benefit, giving him opportunity to show off his skill at writing character drama. Gomez’s art has delivered month after month as well, so I’m excited to see where this goes.
