Force Matters: ‘Star Wars’ #9 Races To The End Of The Line

We’re down to the flagship book as the last series standing — and its end is nigh, with this being its penultimate issue.

New Republic forces converge on Nagi as Reyna Oskure reveals her trump card.
- Ramon Rosanas is the latest artist to join the series, after a couple Pete Woods issues. No stranger to Star Wars, Rosanas recently completed the Hunt for the Falcon miniseries, as well as the earlier Inquisitors mini and a number of issues of the previous volume of this book.
- Having the future Kylo Ren pooping in the background of a panel as a Leia tries to deal with the situation on Nagi is pretty funny.
- Also, baby Ben has a little hover pram like Grogu’s.
- I don’t love that this issue makes a point of arguing Leia — one of sci-fi’s all-time great “I’ll do it my damn self” female action characters — no longer belongs on the front lines, as much sense as it makes (and to Mon Mothma/Segura’s credit, she ultimately does find a way to help that is more impactful than one more gun would have been).
- Amongst the characters name-dropped in the battle group Leia sends to Nagi are Jarek Yeager (from Star Wars: Resistance), Preeti Delman (from the Battle of Jakku maxiseries), and possibly Kasan Moor (from the Rogue Squadron video game).
- Chekov’s Crown of Verity pays off this issue, as Luke uses it against Reyna Oskure.
It’s hard not to feel like this is a bit rushed given the imminent end of the series — everyone on planet comes together to face down Oskure quickly and conveniently, but that same sense of “coming to a close” gives it a narrative weight, and Rosanas draws the hell out of the arrival of the New Republic fleet.
