ICYMI: ‘Lanterns’ Teaser Offers A Glimpse Of GLs In The American Heartland
by Erik Amaya
After what seems like a decade in development, Lanterns is set to debut on HBO and HBO Max later this year. And the cable giant is ready to give people a better idea about the series, based on DC Comics’ Green Lantern, via a recently-uploaded teaser. Kyle Chandler stars as Hal Jordan, a veteran GL training John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). As the teaser reveals, Stewart has enjoyed precious little time with a Green Lantern ring, leading Hal to offer a very strange training session.
It’s not all training, though, as the two Lanterns find themselves in the midst of a “dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” Kelly Macdonald also stars as a local sheriff who is none-to-pleased to have GLs around.
The program originally began its life as the intergalactic-minded Green Lantern from Greg Berlanti. It was even one of the first projects announced for HBO Max, but ultimately fell through. DC Studios then turned to Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King to develop a less-expensive take. Of course, the Green Lantern concept lends itself well to both grandiose space wars and intimate character studies. It remains to be seen, though, just how expansive this series will be as it does acknowledge the existence of the Green Lantern Corps and characters like Ch’p.
Lanterns debuts this August.
