The Comicon.com Team Reveals Their Mario Kart Mains (And Why)

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters today. The first movie was an unexpected delight and hit a lot of major aspects of Nintendo’s mega-franchise. One of them was a massive Mario Kart race, so to get ready for the movie, we challenged each other to a race. Then we started arguing about which character is best, so we turned the conversation into an article! 

Anton Kromoff, Staff Writer, Social Media Whiz 

Morton for sure is my number 1. He’s among the top heavyweights meaning I can floor it, and sacrifice ramp up acceleration in the early laps for consistent speed in the late game. It also means if someone hits me once I’m up to max speed, they bounce off me and slow down or fall off track, while I’m able to maintain speed and control. Way better for how I play, watching the other players and their tactics early on, then deconstructing them in later tracks once they are fatigued and panicked.

Donkey Kong! Like Anton with Morton I appreciate the added heft and stability he brings late game. Plus, he’s a big showboating gorilla, so that’s fun. And I’m an Old, so I’m drawn more to the OG characters.

Luigi. His “averageness” is his benefit, with both speed and control being about middle so he evens out in the pro and con field. Also the heavily-memed glare is just chef kiss.

Yoshi + Teddy Buggy + Roller Tires + Cloud/Paper Glider because that’s what my kid just said. And he’s ten, so I trust him implicitly in this matter. He also beats my ass in every other racing game, so I’ve checked his credentials.

I’m a Toadette player, all the way. The lighter characters have stronger acceleration, can take corners better, and can sneak down the middle a lot easier. Plus I like her better than Toad. Add to that Mario Kart is the only game I can still beat my cocky ten-year-old at consistently, I’ll stick to what works, especially when the trash talk starts.

I have never played a Mario Kart game. I’ve been bad at racing games going back to Pole Position in the arcades, so Mario Kart never appealed to me.

So … Hmm … let’s say Walugi. He’s playable in those games, right?
