Matthieu Bonhomme’s Lucky Luke adventures continue in 2026 with The Long March of Lucky Luke — the new series started in French in Spirou #4586 this past March. Which is the perfect excuse not only to run those images, but some of Bonhomme’s art from the past two very different looks at Morris‘s Lucky Luke.

I do love Lucky Luke, the laconic cowboy who shoots faster than his own shadow. Have done since first seeing a few translated volumes back in my childhood. Told you plenty about it all here.

Created by Morris, the series really came into its own when Rene Goscinny joined as writer whilst Morris concentrated on art. Following that, Morris worked with other writers to keep giving us those glorious volumes. And, following Morris’s passing in 2001, we began to get other artists drawing the character for new volumes, all keeping that classic look to maintain the style and feel of the album series. However, since 2016, there’s been another parallel series, Lucky Luke By …, which lets artists give us a very different take on the character, in styles far from Morris’s.

So far, we’ve had two from Bonhomme — The Man Who Shot Lucky Luke (2016) and Wanted, Lucky Luke (2021), plus volumes by Guillaume Bouzard (Jolly Jumper Stops Responding 2017), Mawil (Lucky Luke Saddles Up 2019), Ralf König (Swiss Bliss 2021), and Blutch (Untamed 2023). All of them are worth a look. And it’s damn good to see Bonhomme’s finished a third volume. I would imagine it’s going to be absolutely lovely when I eventually get to read it in English! For now, I shall simply stare lovingly at the artwork.
