Trailer Watch — ‘Magical Girl Madoka The Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising’

by Tito W. James

Magical Girl Madoka is a seminal anime from 2011. What starts as a cute adventure centering on girls with magic powers hunting witches evolves into a gripping psychological thriller with elements of cosmic horror. Madoka kicked off the trend of dark deconstructionist magical girl anime, but still remains the most beloved and highest quality amongst the show’s many imitators.

The anime’s original 12 episodes were re-released as two films, then followed up by Magical Girl Madoka The Movie: Part 3 Rebellion. Now, the acclaimed saga continues in Magical Girl Madoka The Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising. It’s great to see the return of Gen Urobuchi (Fate Zero) penning the script and, hopefully, giving these iconic characters the send-off they deserve.

The yuri romance between Madoka and Homura could possibly be explored more fully in our more progressive climate. This is a series that cemented my love for anime and the magical girl genre. I hope Madoka fans old and new enjoy it!

Look out for Magical Girl Madoka The Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising in late 2026.
