‘Magic: The Gathering’ Announces ‘Secret Lair Commander Deck: Goblin Storm’

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

When I was a kid, first learning about the wonders Magic: The Gathering held, the goblins were a source of endless fascination for me. I had recently read a few kids’ books about goblins, and I was a bit scared of them in all truth. So at that age, having these little bits of cardboard with amazing art that I could build into a Red deck with drums, mountains, and lightning made understanding and becoming comfortable with these iconic creatures way easier and, honestly, a ton of fun.

I would eventually settle into many decks, most leaning into mono Black or artifact heavy White, but those early days at the table learning from the Elder Nerds and the kids in Scouts will always leave fond memories of MTG Goblins in my heart.

With that front of mind, let’s get into this new Secret Lair Drop called Goblin Storm.

Wizards of the Coast have announced this new Secret Lair Commander Deck featuring unique strategies and absolutely incredible art by the iconic Wizard of Barge!

“Secret Lair has been long known for its love of meteorological phenomena, and to answer the timeless philosophical question, ‘How many Goblins can I accumulate after I storm off to bash my opponents’ face in?’” said Secret Lair Principal Product Lead Steve Sunu. “If you understood any of that last sentence, this is the deck for you! We tasked Wizards of the Coast’s best designers and asked one of Secret Lair’s fan-favorite artists — and longtime Goblin enjoyer — to help us help you develop your own answer to that question.”

Designed by MTG’s Carmen Klomparens and Eli Rice, this deck delivers aggressive, fast-paced Goblin attacks alongside the patience and control of the Storm mechanic. Paired with the playful, distinctive style of Wizard of Barge, which depicts the Goblins of Magic as silly, lovable little gobbos, this 100-card Commander Deck is unlike any other.

It includes 12 borderless foil cards with brand-new art for cards including Zada: Hedron Grinder, Krenko, Mob Boss: Broadside Bombadiers, Grapeshot, Roaming Throne, and more.

There are also 22 brand-new borderless basic Mountains in the Wizard of Barge signature style.

All of these come in a special deck box, accompanied by Foil Goblin tokens, a Storm Count tracker with new Wizard of Barge art, a sweet storage box to keep your new storm contained, and more.

The full Goblin Storm Commander Deck is ready-to-play and 100-cards in total. It will include 12 Foil borderless cards featuring new artwork, 22 Foil borderless Mountains featuring new artwork, 63 Non-foil reprints, 3 Non-foil reprints featuring new artwork, 4 Foil Goblin tokens featuring new artwork, 10 Non-foil double-sided tokens, 1 Storm counter helper, 1 Zada, Hedron Grinder display commander that won’t be legal in sanctioned play, and 1 Deck box. It’s a pretty sizable haul all things considered.

The Secret Lair Commander Deck: Goblin Storm hits the Secret Lair storefront on May 18th at 9:00 AM Pacific Time for $149.99 while supplies last. As a cool little bonus, all single orders over $99 ship free and fans can also sign up for notifications about the sale on the Secret Lair website.

I’m already a fan of Wizard of Barge’s work so seeing his art elevate these offerings  — and this whole fun little set come together –really feels like a cool opportunity to bring something fun to the table.

Until next time, I really want to see more in this vein, maybe rats or squirrels next? Wyrms, even, could be rad. Only time will tell, but Secret Lair always has new surprises up their sleeves, so I know what comes next will probably be pretty epic.
