Free League Announces ‘Legends Of Stormbringer’ Based Off Michael Moorcock’s World Of Elric
by Anton Kromoff
Welcome to the table,
Author Michael Moorcock has been captivating audiences for generations with his stories of the elven albino sorcerer king Elric VIII, 428th Emperor of Melniboné. Since his first appearance in a 1961 story, “The Dreaming City”, within the pages of Science Fantasy #47, Elric has become a pillar of the sword & sorcery genre.
Because of this, it makes complete sense that the iconic publisher Free League has announced a new officially licensed tabletop roleplaying game titled Legends of Stormbringer based on Moorcock’s legendary work.

The game is set in the Young Kingdoms — a world of dying empires, warring gods, and doomed heroes. Sorcery and intrigue is behind every monolithic tower and danger and doom lurks in every looming shadow.
Moorcock’s richly-imagined setting is brought to the tabletop using rules mechanics based on Free League’s award-winning Dragonbane RPG. The system is very accessible and provides multitudes of opportunities for dynamic (and at times deadly) tabletop play.
Richard Watts will be returning to the Young Kingdoms as a setting writer. His work on previous Stormbringer RPGs helped define how generations of roleplayers experienced Moorcock’s world. This is a major development in the space. A storyteller of Watt’s caliber on such a project is sure to bring long-time fans to the table and provide a really rewarding experience for those new to the setting.
“This has been in the works for several months, and we’re thrilled to finally share the news,” said Tomas Härenstam, CEO of Free League Publishing. “We are honored to bring Elric and the Young Kingdoms to the tabletop once more.”
For me, I’m really excited to see if and how they will build Stormbringer itself into the game mechanics. For those not familiar with Moorcock’s work, it is the magical sword wielded by Elric. This large black sentient blade is darker than the void of space and covered in strange runes. It’s said to be created by the forces of chaos, but in truth, it’s an evil entity that is both Elric’s greatest weapon and worst enemy. I’ve always said if offered the opportunity to do any voice work, the only thing I would immediately jump at the chance to do — no questions asked — is the voice of Stormbringer. It is one of the coolest, weirdest, magical items in all of fiction.
